Comments from ParalympicsGB swimmer Maisie Summers-Newton after she won gold in the women’s SM6 200m individual medley.
Name: Maisie Summers-Newton
Result: Gold in the women’s SM6 200m individual medley in 2:56.90
Age: 22
Hometown: Northampton
On the result:
“I was so nervous. I have a lot of self-doubt, no matter how hard you train in the pool, how well I swim throughout the rest of the season, I’m just a person who is quite self-doubtful. When I got in, I could see how close I was to some of the girls, they are usually ahead of me on the fly and the back. On the backstroke, I was like ‘you’re in a really good place here’.
“I just can’t believe it, it has been such a good three years since Tokyo. Finishing my university degree, carrying on swimming and defending my Paralympic title. I just want to thank Andy Sharp, having four athletes here is incredible for one club (Northampton Swimming Club) and what he has done for para sport is brilliant.”
Support network:
“My mum is my absolute rock, she has brought me and my siblings up as a single parent. My grandad has been my swimming taxi, he has come to every competition this year, which is incredible. As a unit, my family are really close and I couldn’t be happier. Last time, they were all watching in my garden so to do it in front of them, I’m so proud.”
